Abu Omar al-Shishani (Arabic language: أبو عمر الشيشاني, also rendered as Abu Omar al-Chechen) is a Chechen-Kist islamist and jihadist and the leader of the Jaish al-Muhajireen wal-Ansar, an anti-government faction in the Syrian civil war linked to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. He is from Georgia’s Pankisi Gorge and fought in the First Chechen War and Second Chechen War against Russia.[1][2] He participated in the Siege of Menagh Air Base.[3]

On September 28, 2013 several Kurdish sources claimed that Abu Omar al-Chechen and another 15 militants have been killed in fight two days earlier.[4] These reports were later retracted.[5]
