During World War Two, 778 Naval Air Squadron was a Service Trials Unit (STU) based at RNAS Crail, Fifeshire, Scotland. The squadron tested all types of aircraft that could be used by the Royal Navy. Key to this was testing new types for deck landing on aircraft carriers. Such aircraft included various types of Seafire, Grumman F6F Hellcat, F4F Wildcat, Grumman TBF Avenger, and F4U Corsair. On August 12, 1944 the squadron moved to RNAS Arbroath, Angus, Scotland.
