The United States Air Force Reserve's 28th Intelligence Squadron (28th IS) is an intelligence unit located at Hurlburt Field, Fla.. The 28th Intelligence Squadron is a classic associate unit supporting the 25th Intelligence Squadron conducting airborne ISR to provide threat warning and precision geo-location to AFSOC and Joint Special Operations Command.
History[]
The 28th Photographic Laboratory Squadron was deployed to Pacific Theater of Operations (PTO) in April 1945, assigned to the 501st Bombardment Group, Very Heavy, XXI Bomber Command, 315th Bombardment Wing, in the Northern Mariana Islands; being stationed at Northwest Field, Guam. Received a Distinguished Unit Citation for attacks on the Maruzen oil refinery at Shimotsu, the Utsubo oil refinery at Yokkaichi, and the petroleum center at Kawasaki.
Reconstituted and re-designated as the 28th Reconnaissance Technical Squadron on 3 Mar 1950, assigned to the 28th Bombardment Group under the 28th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing. The 28th RTS took part in the Atmospheric Nuclear Weapons tests Operation Tumbler–Snapper from 1 Apr 1952 to 5 Jun 1952 by providing aerial and ground technical and training photography to the Defense Nuclear Agency.
