The 2020 China–India skirmish, a fistfight between Chinese and Indian troops, took place in Nathu La, North Sikkim, on 10 May 2020. 11 troops were left injured.[1][2][3] China has not officially confirmed the incident.[4] Boundaries between the two countries are not resolved resulting in such disputes.[2]

Incident[]

According to Indian media reports, the spat began when the Chinese intruded into Muguthang and shouted to the Indian troops, "This (Sikkim) is not your land, this is not Indian territory... so just go back". Following this a Indian Army lieutenant punched the Chinese major on his nose.[5] The other Indian troops present pulled back the lieutenant quickly.[5] Several troops numbering 11 men were left slightly injured in the encounter, of which 7 were Chinese soldiers and 4 were Indian soldiers according to CNN affiliate CNN-News18.[3][6][7] Press Trust of India reported that the incident involved 150 soldiers; stones were also thrown.[2]

Aftermath[]

Following the incident, the lieutenant involved, who was a third-generation military recruit, was called back from the area.[8] An Indian army eastern command spokesman said that the matter was "resolved after 'dialogue and interaction' at a local level" and that "temporary and short-duration face-offs between border-guarding troops do occur as boundaries are not resolved. Troops resolve such issues mutually as per established protocols."[2][9] China did not share details about the incident, with the Chinese defence ministry not confirming the happening of the incident too.[4] The Chinese foreign ministry though stated "Chinese soldiers were always upholding peace and tranquility along the border".[4]

It was reported that at the same time, another clash had taken place between Chinese and Indian troops at Pangong Tso lake in Ladakh.[10] The last time such an incident occurred was also at Pangong Lake in Ladakh in August 2017.[11] The Doklam standoff in 2017 lasted for 73 days.[2][9]
