Ramna Batamul bombing was a series of bomb attacks on 14 April 2001 at a cultural programme of Pahela Baishakh celebration arranged by Chaayanot, the leading cultural organization in Bangladesh.[1]

Ten people including Shujan, a Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami militant were spot dead and many were wounded severely. The Islamic fundamentalist group Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami confessed their involvement in the attack.[2]

Scenario[]

Around 8.00am the first bomb was exploded which was carried by a suicide bomber. Shortly after, there was a second blast when police were conducting recovery and evacuation operation. One policeman was injured in the second bomb explosion. Police also recovered another inactive bomb from the place. The state-owned television BTV was broadcasting the programme live from Ramna Batamul. Eventually, people throughout the country saw the bombing attack live. Following the incident, all cultural functions organised by cultural organisations were postponed.[3]

Eight years after the bomb attack, a court in Dhaka framed charges against Mufti Hannan, chief of banned fundamentalist group HuJI and 13 others of this group.[4]
