The 1st Separate Cavalry Brigade (1-я отдельная кавалерийская бригада) was a former cavalry brigade of the Imperial Russian Army's Cavalry Corps.

History[]

The Separate Cavalry Brigade was originally formed in September 1895 following the reforms to the army. The brigade at that time included:

The next year the brigade was given the prefix "1st", becoming the 1st Separate Cavalry Brigade. In 1907 the regiments were renamed and became the 19th (Archangelogorod) Dragoon Regiment and 22nd (Irkutsk) Hussars respectively.. In 1913 the brigade received a mounted reconnaissance troop, and the following year gained an engineer team and just four months after that in October 1914 they gained a horse artillery battery. The brigade only saw service for a short time as it was a smaller and not entirely combat effective brigade. Just before the start of the war, the brigade was stationed in Riga under the control of the 20th Army Corps. When the Russian Empire entered into World War I the brigade was immediately sent to the North-Western Frontier Front. Then the brigade moved towards Novogorad where it remained until merging. Finally in April 1916 the brigade merged into the Consolidated Cavalry Division. Just before the disbandment the brigade consisted of the following:

  • Headquarters under Major General Svita Khan-Hussein-Nakhichevan
  • 1st Separate Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop
