1st Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Brigade (1 ISR Bde) of the British Army was created as part of the Army 2020 reform, which oversees military intelligence, ISTAR, and electronic warfare units of the army.

Brigade[]

Under the Army 2020 programme, a larger emphasis was placed on cyber and specialist capabilities. As part of this reorganisation, the 1st Military Intelligence Brigade and 1st Reconnaissance Brigade were merged into the 1st Intelligence and Surveillance Brigade. The new brigade was stood up on 1 September 2014 at Upavon and placed under Force Troops Command.[1][2] Following the integration of the two reserve Special Air Service Regiments (SAS), the subtitle 'Reconnaissance' was added.

Under the 2019 Field Army reorganisation, the brigade was transferred to the new 6th (United Kingdom) Division.[3][4]

Group[]

Under the Future Soldier programme announced on 25 November 2021, the brigade will be reduced to a Colonel's Command.[5] Subsequently, many units will be moved under direct command of the divisions (see future structure below). The new command will be known as 'Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Group'. In addition, the group will transfer from 6th Division to 'Field Army Troops', reporting directly to Commander Field Army. The future role of the group was described as "The Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Group will command the Army's miniature UAS (32 Reg RA), tactical UAS (47 Reg RA), counter-intelligence (2 MI Bn), and reach back intelligence (3 MI Bn) capabilities, the Specialist Group Military Intelligence, and Land Intelligence Fusion Centre. It will also command the Land Image Intelligence Company, a pool of experts who deliver image analysis for all the Army's image collection platforms.[5] Later the group was divided into two further groups: the Understand Group and Surveillance Group.
